Local food in the bad weather
Submitted by Helen Wright on Thu, 07/01/2010 - 14:16. LocalFoodNews | Archive
As you can imagine it is proving difficult to get fresh local food at the moment. Most of our smaller suppliers don't produce anything at this time of year and Mark at Ashtrees Farm is on holiday this week - hopefully in warmer climes!
Tolhurst Organic Produce is our main local supplier at the moment and they have two problems. One is that many vegetables like leeks are completely frozen and impossible to harvest. The other problem is that they are based off Whitchurch Hill and access is very difficult given the snow.
We have ordered extra supplies from our organic wholesalers so where the markets are running there should be some fresh vegetables. Rest assured that your local food team are ready to get back to supplying local veg again once the conditions improve.

We currently have some beef from Waltham Place, an organically farmed estate near Maidenhead. There are various joints and cuts in the freezer at the True Food warehouse. There is a sheet at markets listing what is available with prices. You can then order what you want and it will be delivered frozen to your most convenient market.
We are also now taking orders for turkeys and other Christmas meat. These are from Sheepdrove Organic Farm in Lambourn, Berkshire. Order forms are available at all markets.
For more details or to order either the beef or Christmas meat email localfood@truefood.coop or ring 0845 330 8272.
Extending the choice of bread from local suppliers sold by TFC
Submitted by Helen Wright on Sun, 18/10/2009 - 20:02. LocalFoodNews | ArchiveOur 'Oxford loaf' is a sour dough / yeast mix, that has a long fermentation process, at least 4 hours, as opposed to supermarket bread, which has a 20-minute fermentation. The benefit of a slow ferment is that enzymes are given time to break down some of the proteins, which in their raw state many experts believe are responsible for the rise in coeliac disease.
The loaf itself is made from a mixture of different varieties of wheat, including spelt and emmer wheat, grown organically, by a local farmer. No flour improvers or preservatives are used, but you will find that the bread stays fresh for about a week, if kept in the fridge.
We will be offering samples of the bread for customers to taste at all of the markets this week,19th to 24th October. This will help us gauge the likely demand for regular supplies of these loaves. We look forward to hearing your comments.
