Green Shoots

By Francis Jakeman, Chair of True Food

Green Shoots is a 5 acre plant nursery in Rotherfield Peppard, just north of Sonning Common. They supply a lot of our organically grown fresh greens; so I was delighted when Frances, their manager, invited us to visit for the day, to see what they do.

GreenshootsWe have arranged to go on Sunday 7th May arriving for coffee at 10am and leaving after tea and cake at 3.30pm. Frances, the manager, will show us around the site in the morning, describing their growing methods. At 12 noon we will enjoy a buffet style lunch in a gazebo, and then at 1.30pm we will hold our AGM.

The place is ideal for children and dogs, as there is rough pasture to explore with chickens and bees to find. There is plenty of parking, though it’s only 5 miles cycling distance from Emmer Green! We are also planning a car sharing scheme, so look out for details in the weekly email. In the event of bad weather, lunch and the AGM will take place in their packing she.Greenshootslogo

The day, including lunch, will be free for True Food members and their offspring, though we do need you to sign up beforehand so we know how many people to cater for. It will be a buffet with all the items labelled, so you can choose what suits you! Non-members are also welcome, at a cost of £5 each, payable on the day.

Green Shoots is one of the activities run by ‘Ways and Means’ to help adults with learning and physical disabilities. It was formed in 1968 in Caversham, and moved to Manor Farm in 2014. You can learn more by going to

We are planning a Fun Day with games and a treasure hunt for children (or adults!) when we can get to know each other better as members of True Food. The AGM will be a chance for you to hear how our business fared in 2016, and the various plans we are considering for the next 12 months. I look forward to an enjoyable day, when we can all get to know each other better.
